A useful way to think about the purpose of weekly/daily/hourly news media is not that it keeps people informed. Instead, it provides common subject matter for people to discuss. Given this, it's not surprising that news is often coupled with sports and weather.
If this is true, you don't need to feel like an uninformed, irresponsible non-adult for not closely following the news. If anything really consequential shows up on the news that will have long-term impacts, it will be hard not to find out about it anyway.
